New 2025 Toyota 4Runner: What we know about engine, price

And if the driver needs to see out the back but the window is all muddy, just drop it down with the touch of a button. The 4Runner offers up to 47.2 cubic-feet of storage space behind the second row of seats. That’s on par with the Ford at 47.9 cubic-feet, but more generous than the Honda with 41.2 cubic-feet, or the Jeep at 37.7 cubic-feet. If you opt for a third row in the Toyota, you get 9 cubes of storage space behind it when it’s up, and 46.3 cubic-feet when it’s folded down. Both the Honda Passport and Jeep Grand Cherokee are V6-powered and they rate 21 and 22 mpg, respectively, in combined driving.

Favorite Features

Blind-spot monitoringAlong with rear cross-traffic alert, this feature becomes standard across the Runner range. This model also has the heritage grille treatment, where the word Toyota is spelled out in upper-case letters instead of the usual company logo. Even for a midsize SUV, the driving position in the Runner is high. Getting in and out is not as easy as some more car-like SUV/crossovers, but there are optional side steps. The 4Runner’s insurance costs are about average for its class. According to our data, the average 30-year-old female driver with a good record can expect an average annual premium of $2,045 for the 4Runner TRD Pro, the most expensive version to insure.

Make sure you check that door jamb sticker on any truck before you buy it. But if the Land Cruiser really does ship with a 1,600 pound payload, that will be the reason to buy one over its otherwise mechanically identical siblings. The secondary big mechanical differentiator truck people use to quantify capability are off-road features, which are traction, gearing, suspension articulation, tire size and angles. The only difference we really have to worry about here is traction. A 5-speed automatic transmission sends that to either the rear wheels in standard form, a part-time 4-wheel-drive system, or a full-time 4-wheel-drive setup (available in the SR5 and TRD Off-Road). The SR5, SR5 Premium, and Limited models offer a third seating row for two.

Safety & Convenience

It looks and feels dated inside and out, and drives like a product of the Aughts. Its four-liter V6 gas engine may be smooth, but its fairly feeble 270 hp output is further hobbled by being fed through a five-speed automatic gearbox that simply doesn’t have enough ratios. The result is sluggish performance befitting of such heavy steering, while the ride is wearyingly bouncy and the handling could best be described as ‘absent’. As for the fuel economy, combined figures of 17 MPG are about as bad as it gets these days.

Meanwhile, its tech-focused and versatile interior helps keep you connected and comfortable as you explore the world’s wildest terrain. Now available in Solar Octane , TRD Pro looks as aggressive and capable as it performs. One thing Toyota did mention about both of these cars, though, is that they will be getting fancy driver assist systems. In fact, camera and sensor bumps and panels can be seen on the roof and fenders, similar to that found on some Lexus LS models. While Toyota gave no details on pricing, performance or range, we wouldn't be surprised if they both borrow from the previously launched bZ3 sedan. That car relies on lithium-iron-phosphate batteries from BYD, and launched with powertrains making between 178 and 238 horsepower.

Performance

If you’re all about the entourage, you'll be able to accommodate up to seven passengers with the available third-row seating on SR5 and Limited grades. The seats also have a 50/50 split capability to make room for cargo. The available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) helps 4Runner make molehills out of mountains. When taking on extreme off-road terrain, this system is designed to automatically decouple 4Runner’s sway bars as needed, helping improve wheel articulation. And when the terrain goes back to smooth and flat, the sway bars are designed to automatically reconnect. 4Runner delivers serious performance with an available i-FORCE MAX 2.4L turbocharged hybrid powertrain.

But this aspect of the driving experience is merely a way of getting to the 4Runner’s happy place, away from the tarmac. Built on a truck foundation using the time-honored body-on-frame construction method, the 4Runner is tough, capable, and — thanks to being a Toyota — dependable. Exploring the wilderness is all well and good, but let’s not underestimate the joy of getting home afterward.

Fuel Type

Throw in the signature heritage-inspired “TOYOTA” grille, a thick TRD aluminum skid plate and slick new Solar Octane color , and this rugged SUV fears no trail. Given that, I think the sweet spot for both the Tacoma and 4Runner is going to be in non-hybrid TRD Offroad trim. That includes a locking rear differential, and an optional electronic disconnect for the front sway bar (sway bars increase on-road safety but reduce off-road articulation). Optioned like that, you can expect to pay about $47,000 for a Tacoma, and likely a little more for a 4Runner. All 4Runner trims are powered by a 4.0-liter V6 engine that makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, and with a five-speed automatic transmission. That’s considered antiquated in the segment, where competitors make more power and have eight- to 10-speed transmissions.

When backing up, the area visible to the camera is displayed on the 8-in. 4Runner’s available front and rear parking assist sonar beeps to tell you how close the bumpers are from a detected object. Lending the soundtrack to your many adventures is 4Runner’s available JBL® audio system.

And depending on your existing mobile provider, you can add the Wi-Fi Connect subscription to your current mobile plan. We’ll even include a three-month trial to get you started. Control your 4Runner, near or far, from the palm of your hand. Using Toyota’s available Remote Connect through the Toyota app, you can start the engine, lock/unlock doors, and locate your vehicle with your compatible smartphone or smartwatch.

Otherwise, the Runner midsize SUV has the usual 5-seater setup. Cloth upholstery is standard in the lower trims, giving way to simulated leather and then the real stuff in pricier variants. The 40th Anniversary Special Edition adds bronze-colored contrasting stitching. The 4Runner looks tough and rugged, and that’s the whole point.

Whether they wear a hybrid badge or not, all versions of these trucks return miles-per-gallon numbers in the low 20s, depending on the traction options detailed below, and the weight added by luxury features. According to Toyota, the hybrid engine available in Runner models is a turbocharged 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces up to 326 horsepower and 465 foot-pounds of torque. The standard 2.4-liter engine can produce 278 horsepower and 317 foot-pounds of torque.

That trim is a good choice for those who want something that will get them to a remote campsite but still handle day-to-day driving. For the very toughest stuff you’ll want the TRD Pro at $54,020, the priciest of the 4Runner trims, which includes skid plates and Fox shocks. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the SR5, TRD Sport, and SR5 Premium. On these trims, you’ll spend $1,875 to get a part-time four-wheel-drive system. The Limited also comes with RWD as standard and is available with a full-time 4WD system for $2,035. The TRD Off-Road, TRD off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, and TRD Pro come with 4WD as standard.
